MUSICAL JOURNEYS
Luna´s musical path is like a journey. Born in the Netherlands in a musical family she listens to all sorts of music, but the jazz that her father listens to has her special attention. In 2010 she finishes her musical studies in jazz singing at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with the final grade “cum laude” (a 9).
She travels several times to the United States where she takes singing lessons with Theo Bleckmann and composition lessons with Bill Markovitz (Manhattan School of Music). Furthermore her curiosity brings her to India, where she studies south Indian singing in Bangalore, which puts her subsequently on the path of flamenco singing, being the ages old tradition of Indian music one of the roots of this Spanish musical style.
MOVED BY FLAMENCO
Luna travels to Seville in Spain to emerge herself in flamenco and feels deeply moved by the raw expression of flamenco singing, in which she recognises both deep sadness and intense joy of life.
A couple of years later she moves to Barcelona (Spain) where she, as the first foreigner ever, is accepted in the career of flamenco singing at the conservatory “Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña” (ESMUC), studying with flamenco singer José Miguel Vizcaya “Chiqui de la Linea”.
CONCERTS
Until 2012 she builds bridges between jazz and flamenco with her band “Radio Luna”, performing frequently in great venues like the Amsterdam “Uitmarkt”, the Concertgebouw, pop temple Paradiso, the Vondelpark Theatre and other theaters throughout the Netherlands.
Luna performs several times in the flamenco concert series “Poco ruido y mucho duende” with flamenco singer Mayte Martín and also in Mayte Martín’s concert series “Savia Nueva”. She also sings in the series “Grandes Conjuntos” in concert hall L’Auditori in Barcelona with flamenco guitarist Juan Gómez “Chicuelo” and with guitarist Juan Carlos Gómez Pastor. Besides that, Luna is the singer of the flamenco trio “Luna Flamenca” which consists furthermore of a guitarist and a dancer, and she also composes music and lyrics for her own jazz group.
BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
In 2015 she graduates in flamenco singing at the prestigious Barcelona conservatory “ESMUC” as the first foreigner ever to achieve this, with a repertoire of only her own compositions (lyrics & music) called “Entre Dos Mundos” (Between Two Worlds). These pieces are brought out on a cd with the same title in January 2017, which Luna officially presents at the internationally renowned festival “Flamenco Biënnale Nederland”.
In November 2017, Luna publishes her first book, titled ‘SOLO‘. This autobiography about Luna’s life up to now parts from her carefree childhood, passes by the sad years in which she loses her parents and sister due to various illnesses, and finally arrives to a period of renewed zest of life, which gives her the strength to obtain the official conservatory title in flamenco singing as the very first foreigner. ‘SOLO’ is a combination of a family history, a travel journey and a report of a personal transformation.
AT PRESENT
Luna lives and works in both the Netherlands and Spain. Her voice is a reflection of all the places that enchant her on her continuous journey, and through which she is incessantly inspired to sing and express herself without limits. She is currently writing music and lyrics for her new album, which she will announce more about in the coming months. It is certain that her new work will feature both her jazz and flamenco background, which she gradually mixes with more electronic sounds and timbres.
